As the month of November begins, the art room is beginning to fill up with wonderful student art projects.
Kindergartners have created a landscape with trees and deer! Two classes have worked on a still life by designing vases and filling them with branches of bittersweet. The K’s have demonstrated some excellent art skills this year!
First Graders drew dinosaurs and placed them in dinosaur environments. They’ve also created a color-mixing book after reviewing primary and secondary colors. Firsts did a great job remembering their color combinations.
Second Grade produced secondary color books. The book pages have primary colored cellophane windows that pair up to form the secondary colors. Second Graders have begun painting pumpkins for their still life. Their color mixing skills are advancing well!
Third Graders have produced a forest of trees! They started out with pencil drawn trees. For their second tree Thirds created “free trees” using their choice of mixed media. Their final trees were drawn with ultra-fine markers, giving their trees a “pen and ink” appearance. Their tree drawing talents have been expanding wonderfully! Third grades are now beginning their dragon unit – more on that in the next Art Review.
Fourth Graders have painted trees using watercolor. Their shading, use of texture and balance in their paintings is quite remarkable – when you see the Fourth Graders’ watercolors on display, you will agree! The Fourths are exploring pen and ink techniques now and will soon begin their Renaissance unit.
The Fifth Graders have been writing and drawing in their nature journals. They’ve used 5X loupes (magnifiers) to get up close with nature. The Fifth Grade will be working with printmaking to design their nature journal covers. They are currently experiencing pen and ink.
The week of October 30 – November 3, all classes are having a “free art” day. “Free Art” is when students select from a large assortment of art supplies to build their own creations. It is remarkable to Mrs. Pennie just how many innovative projects leave the art room during this week!
Students have constructed Art Portfolios to house their flat work.Sculptural projects will be taken home after being displayed at Greenwood. Flat work will be kept in the art student’s portfolios throughout the year. Portfolio art will be selected to hang in the art room or in hallway frames as the year progresses. Please know that parents may view their art student’s portfolio or request to take home a piece of their artwork by contacting Mrs. Pennie.
