Greenwood Art Review
January/February 2007

Kindergartners are finishing up their Rainbow Fish prints. K’s are learning the process of printmaking – they are quite happy with the final results of printing. They have now begun experiencing clay. Their second session with clay will produce pinch pots that will be painted after fired in the kiln.

First Graders made clay turtles and painted them Oaxacan style. The turtles are visiting the library for a few weeks of display. Penguins are now being creatively drawn by the Firsts – they are surprising Mrs. Pennie with their drawing abilities!

Second Grade made miniature ski hats out of yarn – all the seconds caught on to the knot process immediately! The Seconds have just created coil pots – their pots are drying and will be fired soon. After that comes the painting process followed by display of their clay works.

Third Graders applied glaze to their clay fired dragons – opening the kiln after the glaze firing was so colorful! Their dragons are beautifully crafted and glazed. They are on display in the library along with the first grade turtles. The Thirds are now beginning their Egyptian unit. They will be studying hieroglyphics and creating mummy cases throughout February.

Fourth Grades are drawing pastel self-portraits in their Renaissance unit. This process is a big effort that takes time and patience. Their efforts are starting to pay off – you will be amazed at their portraits when they are finished! After the portraits are completed, the Fourths will begin their clay unit.

In January, Fifth Graders completed the sewing/binding of their nature journals. Fifths are now into their clay unit and are building treasure boxes using the slab method. They will be able to explain the slab process if you ask. It’s a lot of work, but they are up to clay construction and are learning what works to make a box come together, hold together, and stay together.
